Down a winding country lane past the church, open fields and a handful of stone cottages, a few minutes north of the Podimore roundabout, this 17th century thatched inn sits at the heart of Babcary. Flagstone floors, exposed beams, open fires and a supply of cosy nooks make the case before anyone opens a menu. It works as a locals' watering hole first, which is precisely why passing visitors tend to like it.
Local ales, an a la carte menu, hearty Sunday lunch and wood-fired pizzas cooked outdoors cover most moods. Six boutique bedrooms in a converted barn come with super king beds, ensuite bathrooms and plenty of space. Weddings and parties run without fixed packages, from three course sit-downs to festival-style, with a marquee seating 100. Open every day of the year; note breakfast is Saturday and Sunday only, 8.30am to 11.30am.
