It started with a family recipe for Cucumber Relish. Chef Emma Macdonald grew up eating it, then had the fairly simple idea that properly full-flavoured chutneys and preserves ought to be more widely available. The result is a range made in Devon, on the Lee Mill Industrial Estate at Ivybridge, that has spread far beyond the county. Not a boutique operation, then, but one that has kept the point of the original jar in view.

The range is genuinely broad: chutneys, relishes, pickles and salsas, marmalades, jams and curds, savoury jellies, mustards, mayonnaise, dressings and marinades, cooking sauces, gravies, plus flapjacks, biscuits and fudge. Mrs Picklepot handles the pickled onions, Brendan the chilli sauces. Spicy Tomato and Caramelised Onion Chutney and Sticky Caramelised Onions are both £4.10, and jars come in mini, standard and large kilner sizes.
