South Battisborough Farm runs down to the sea near Mothecombe Beach, and it is the Jersey-cross cows grazing that stretch of South Devon coast who do the real work here. Lawrence and Lee Glanville and Alastair Graham have run things since 2018, with the Glanvilles' eldest daughter Zoe as production manager. The production unit sits on the farm, a few hundred metres from the milking parlour, which makes the food miles closer to food metres.
Fresh whole milk comes straight from the parlour daily, is pasteurised and combined with double cream, sugar and skimmed milk powder, then aged overnight before flavours go in and it is churned: cow to cone inside 24 hours. Honeycomb, creamy Devon dairy loaded with sweet pieces, is a reliable star among the regular and one-off flavours. The farm gelateria sells scoops and take-home tubs in summer; check the Google listing before setting off.
