Stockbeare Farm sits at Jacobstowe, near Okehampton, with the tors of Dartmoor on the skyline - a corner of mid Devon whose rain and humidity make it very good indeed at growing grass. Cheese has been made here for over 30 years, using milk from a single herd at Dunstaple Farm, Holsworthy, grazed outdoors through the summer and delivered early each morning straight after milking, then pasteurised.
The core cheese is a full fat semi-hard truckle, light and buttery when young and mellowing into something fuller with age. Sizes run from small truckles up to the 4.5kg Devon Oke, the one most people come back for, and there is a version blended with Chiltern Ale wholegrain mustard, plus Devon Maid, a soft brie or camembert style. Find it in specialist cheese shops, delis, farmers markets and South West agricultural shows, or order by mail order and settle up by card or BACS.
