Cornish Garlic Company

Food hygiene rating: 5 out of 5

It started with a television programme and fifty Elephant Garlic bulbs planted in pots in a back garden. Matt and Amanda Nutbean were taken enough with the life cycle and the health benefits to keep going, and around nine years on that same crop is still the backbone of the business. Elephant Garlic remains the main event, grown in Cornwall and turned into a range that has clearly been tinkered with rather than dreamed up in one go.

The buttery spreads are where the curiosity shows: Kimchi and Elephant Garlic Scape, Thai Spices, Tandoori and Nigella Seed Scape. Alongside them sit tapenades, relishes, chutneys, savoury salts, oils and even chocolate, plus Elephant Garlic Infused Honey in 113g jars and a Red Pepper Jam at 227g. Start with a spread if you are new to it, then work outwards; the honey is the one that surprises people.
