Britannia @ The Beach

FishmongerSeafoodCafeRestaurant

Food hygiene rating: 5 out of 5

Beesands sits on shingle between Torcross and Hallsands, and The Shack sits right on it, with the National Trust coast path running past the door. Nick and Anita Hutchings, a local fishing family, owned the building for close to 40 years, first as a bait store, and built Britannia @ The Beach as a way of completing the cycle from catching seafood to selling it to cooking it. Winter storms in 2014 and Storm Emma in 2018 prompted a rebuild.

It works as takeaway, cafe, licenced restaurant and fishmonger, with local seafood the whole point and produce sourced from the South Hams and wider Devon where possible. Members of Food and Drink Devon, still family run, and welcoming to well-behaved dogs. Parking is free. Open all year bar short breaks in January and December. Groups of five or more need a ten pound per head deposit, refundable up to 48 hours before.
