Food hygiene rating pending

William Boddington arrived in Mevagissey as a 16-year-old sea cadet, married a local girl and stayed. In 1946, just after the war, he opened a market garden in the fields above the village, growing fruit, vegetables and flowers. The family farm is still the base for the conserves, chutneys, marmalades and relishes made here, and the preserving is still done in small batches rather than at volume.

Everything is slow-cooked by hand with no artificial preservatives, which is the whole point: clean labels and fruit that still tastes like fruit. The range runs from the best-selling Strawberry Conserve through Raspberry, Blackcurrant, Blackberry, Cherry and Apricot, plus Orange Marmalade, Apple Chutney, Red Onion Relish and a Chilli Jam. Most jars start at £5.25, with the Christmas Chutney a little more. Start with the strawberry, then work sideways into the chutneys.
