The White Hart Inn at Dartington Hall

Set in the medieval courtyard of the Dartington Estate, next to the Great Hall and the Grade II* listed gardens, this is a pub with genuine history behind it. The Feasting Hall is among the oldest buildings on the estate, built between 1388 and 1400 by John Holand, half-brother of Richard II. Look up for the king's white hart crest in the ceiling, then find the old oven hood, the spit boy recesses and the stairs to nowhere.

Tenant and licensee Dan Foster runs seasonal menus that swing from delicate French-inspired plates to bold English flavours, with sustainable, local sourcing throughout and local ales at the bar. Sunday roasts start at noon and draw a crowd, built on locally sourced meats, vegetables and sides. Dogs are welcome and muddy boots are no obstacle after a walk in the gardens. Book ahead, and check availability first, as the place closes for private events.
