The Union Inn

PubDartmoor

Food hygiene rating: 4 out of 5

The oldest tavern still trading in Moretonhampstead, The Union Inn occupies a building thought to date back to late medieval times, likely a Hall House originally. It took its current name in 1807, marking the Act of Union that joined Great Britain and Ireland. Current owner Siân Colridge, who has run the pub since 2004, is a direct descendant of a 19th-century landlord, and the interior has stayed largely unchanged for around fifty years, right down to a converted stable that now serves as a dining room.

Three Dartmoor Brewery beers - Jail Ale, Dartmoor Legend and Dartmoor Zero - sit on the bar alongside other real ales, and the kitchen sources from Devon suppliers such as Complete Meats of Exeter for a home-cooked menu built around a ploughman's lunch, Devon beef chilli and traditional battered cod. Sunday brings a carvery from midday to 7pm, with roasted meats, Yorkshire puddings and proper puddings to follow. The pub opens daily from 11.45am, with food served Monday to Saturday lunch and evening and all afternoon on Sunday.
