Built in the 1750s as a gentleman's residence and a pub for more than two centuries since, this free house sits in the hills and fields just outside Bridport, within reach of the Jurassic Coast. Park up, walk beside the River Brit or take one of the footpaths and bridleways that thread this corner of West Dorset, then come back for the log fire in winter or the garden and its fire pit when the evenings stretch out.
Being free of the tie means real ales and ciders from local brewers and further afield, with guest ales changing regularly, plus wines and a Pimms for the garden. Food runs to hearty meals and takeaway, and Friday is steak night, two dining with a free bottle of wine. Dogs are properly catered for rather than merely tolerated: a dog friendly bar, doggy beer, ice cream and roast lunches, and a secure field next door. Keep them on a lead, and note one indoor dining area is dog free.
