Sanctuary Coffee spent four years roasting speciality coffee and shipping orders to 62 countries before opening a physical shop, choosing Cockington Village just outside Torquay for its first cafe and lifestyle store. The roastery itself is a few miles away in Longcombe, where the beans for the shop's House Espresso and rotating competition-grade nano lots are roasted.
What sets it apart is where the money goes: over the four years before the shop opened, the business raised more than £15,000 for UK animal charities, and that cause is baked into how it operates rather than bolted on. Alongside the coffee, the Cockington shop sells homeware and ceramics, seasonal flowers and sustainable wooden toys, making it as much a small lifestyle store as a cafe. It's open daily, with slightly shorter hours on Wednesdays and Fridays.
