Powderham Farm Shop

Set in the grounds of Powderham Castle on the bank of the Exe, this family-owned farm shop looks out over the castle, the deer park and the estuary beyond. It is an unusual combination: butchery, delicatessen, bistro and, of all things, a working Post Office under one roof. Cyclists and walkers on the estuary path have long since worked out that it makes a very good halfway stop.

The butchery supplies locally reared meat, game and poultry from Westcountry farmers, with staff who will talk you through cuts and cooking. The deli counter runs to cheese, charcuterie and freshly baked pastry goods from independent regional producers, and there is seasonal fruit and veg from local growers. Coffee and hot pasties travel well. Ask to sample the cheeses before you commit, and stay for a sit-down meal in the bistro if time allows.
