The trail back begins in Budleigh Salterton, with a Major returning from the Second World War carrying a secret pâté recipe from a Strasbourg hotel chef, a shop on Fore Street, and later The Kitchen Shop and a brisk Pâté by Post trade. The Laxon family joined in the early seventies; Graham Worrall bought the business in 1979 and started experimenting with pickles, producing a first batch of Onion & Pineapple Chutney that became known simply as Devon Chutney.

Three generations on, and named Food Drink Devon's Best Brand in 2018, the range runs to hand-made gluten-free chutneys, preserves, savoury jellies, piccalilli and salsa, plus a gourmet line and gift packs. Everything now comes in 10oz jars packed in recyclable cardboard, which keeps breakages down in transit. Delivery is included on a minimum order of six jars, pick and mix, or a single gift pack, so build a mixed six and start with the Onion & Pineapple.
