Chunk of Devon started out the back of a small butcher's shop and was taken on by Simon and Suzi Bryon-Edmond in 2006, growing from there into a pastry operation working out of Ottery St Mary. Pies, pasties, pork pies, sausage rolls, quiches and cakes all come in standard and gluten-free versions, treating gluten-free as a proper discipline rather than a token line on the menu, and the business has picked up more than 300 awards along the way.

Chicken, leek and bacon is the pie worth judging the range by, available either way, and the gluten-free list runs further than most bakeries bother with - steak, ale and chestnut mushroom, plus a vegan veggie tagine. Everything is sold online and posted out, with boxes doing most of the work: an eight-pasty selection, a steak lovers' pie and pasty box, a cheese box, or ten veggie savouries for anyone stocking a freezer rather than buying for one visit.
