The Upside Bar Co. opened at 104 Queen Street in June 2024, a small micropub within easy walking distance of Newton Abbot's railway station and its bus routes. It's the sister venue to the original Upside Bar in Paignton, and it wears its brewing influences on the walls - the place is decorated in brewery memorabilia rather than fitted out like a conventional pub.
The draw is the beer: up to sixteen craft beers alongside five ciders, with two changing cask ales on rotation and names like Yarde and Reddaways among the local producers featured. There's no kitchen, but customers are welcome to bring in food from the takeaways nearby, and the bar has a pool table, wi-fi and a dog-friendly welcome. It keeps short, focused hours - Thursday afternoons into the evening, Friday and Saturday from noon, and Sunday afternoon - and stays closed the rest of the week, which suits a bar built around a rotating tap list rather than passing footfall.
