Coombe Cellars

Coombe Cellars stands on the south bank of the Teign estuary at Combeinteignhead, a site with a long working history behind the current dining pub. In the 17th century it was known as the Ferry Boat Inn, for the ferry crossing nearby, then as the Old Smugglers Inn in the 18th century when local smugglers used the shoreline cellars to land contraband alongside their catch. The Cellars name comes from those old fish cellars - huts where fishermen not local to the area stored boats, nets and gear.

Today it's a large pub with patios and a conservatory looking out over the estuary and Haldon moor beyond, food and drink built around that view. As late as the 1850s the site was still being used to land tobacco taken over Lower Haldon - the kind of history that outlasts most pub signs, and one of the reasons it's still one of the most-reviewed venues on the Teign.
