The Sunset Society on Old Tiverton Road runs two lives in one room: a surf-inspired brunch spot by day, and a live music bar and pizza joint by night. It's the work of Howard, previously behind Pura Vida cafe, and Ben, who managed the student institution Timepiece, who joined forces in 2024 to build a venue that could cover a student clientele's whole day rather than just one slot in it. Pastries come from Lilac Bakery, the coffee is locally roasted, and both oat and dairy milk are standard rather than an add-on.
Daytime food runs Mediterranean-leaning and changes with what's fresh - think French toast and a full English at the breakfast end, plus lighter brunch plates through the rest of the day - while evenings shift toward pizza alongside the bar list and a live music programme. The layout has separate rooms, which makes it as workable for laptop-and-coffee sessions as it is for a Friday night out. Opening hours stretch late on Thursdays and Fridays for the evening side. With 86 Google reviews at 4.5 stars, it has built a reputation as a relaxed, low-drama spot that suits studying and socialising equally well.
