The Ropemakers

Built in the late eighteenth century by the Gundry family, this was The Sun Inn long before it took its current name. The Brewery refurbished it in 1989 and renamed it for Bridport's defining trade, net and rope making, which was based just across the road. The building has a Tardis quality to it. John and Geraldine Baker run it now, with an eye on cooking properly in their own kitchens using local suppliers.

The menu changes often, so treat any printed version as a sketch. Expect breaded Huxley, a local halloumi-style cheese, with sweet chilli dip; Dorset rarebit on toast made with Dorset Red and a little cider; haddock in crisp batter with homemade tartare; and a smoked fish plate of mackerel, halibut, salmon and trout with Charmouth Bakery granary bread. Live music on Friday and Saturday evenings, quiz at 8pm on Tuesdays. Check the specials board for the curry.
