The Galley Restaurant

Number 41 Fore Street has been feeding Topsham since the reign of George III, and for thirty-six of those years it has been a fish and seafood restaurant with its focus deliberately narrow. The building is 300 years old, the estuary is right there, and the kitchen, now led by Head Chef Dan Kavanagh, has collected a Michelin Plaque for 2026 and an AA Rosette. Independent, stand-alone, and disinclined to do anything it cannot do properly.

The menu changes daily according to what Brixham Harbour and Newlyn Fish Market landed that morning, so fish often arrives hours out of the water. Around it sits native-breed Devon beef from Good Game, pork, lamb and cured meats from Topsham Butchers, vegetables from Topsham Green Grocers, cheese from West Country Cheeses, plus a Valrhona Hukambi chocolate mousse and a short wine list. Open Tuesday to Saturday, four miles south-east of Exeter. Ask for an estuary table.
