Sprout

Sprout is a small plant-based cafe in the heart of Exeter, close enough to the Cathedral to catch a view of it, and everything on the menu is vegan and made from scratch on site. It's a walk-in-only operation with no bookings, dog-friendly, and open Thursday to Sunday - food runs from 9am to 2.30pm, with coffee and cake carrying on for another half hour after that.

The kitchen turns out warm focaccia, herby chickpea flatbread, a mixed vegetable quiche, and seasonal salads and pastry rolls that change with what's in. Regulars point to the vegan quiche, the focaccia sandwiches and the potato salad as the ones to order, alongside a solid rotating list of vegan cakes and cookies. On Sundays the cafe runs a Sprout Sunday Special afternoon tea - finger sandwiches, mini sausage rolls, fruit scones and cakes, with unlimited tea or coffee - which has become one of its signature draws alongside the everyday counter menu.
