Old Vienna Restaurant

Restaurant

Food hygiene rating: 5 out of 5

The Old Vienna Restaurant sits in Lisburne Square in Torquay, a cosy 20-seat room run by chef and proprietor Werner Rott, who trained at the Hotel Schloss Fuschl in Salzburg before bringing his Austrian training to the English Riviera. The building has been refurbished to a high standard, mixing solid hardwood tables and contemporary leather chairs with touches of traditional Austrian decor - understated rather than themed.

The menu leans on seasonal, locally sourced produce given an Austrian treatment, with schnitzel and apple strudel as the anchor dishes alongside fillet steaks and other artisan mains. It's a small, personal operation rather than a big brigade kitchen, which shows in the seasoning and care on the plate - reflected in a strong 4.8 rating from close to 300 reviews. It's open Thursday to Sunday from 6.30pm, so it's a booking-ahead evening restaurant rather than a casual walk-in.
