Millbrook Inn

Sunday RoastPub

Food hygiene rating: 5 out of 5

Southpool sits at the top of a tidal creek off the Salcombe estuary, and the pub at its centre has become something of a South Hams institution - Michelin and Trencherman's listed, and talked about by people who take their eating seriously. None of which has changed the fundamentals. Dogs by the fire, locals at the bar, a brook running past in summer and a Sunday roast that justifies the drive down the lanes.

The bar is where it starts: local ales and ciders, gin made along the coast, and a wine list running from familiar classics to bottles from small organic and biodynamic growers, chosen because the team actually drink them. The menu shifts with the seasons and the tides, generous and locally sourced. Two cottages across the road, Land and Sea, each sleep four with a private garden - useful if the coast path and the beaches warrant more than a day.
