Koota Juice

Koota Juice was set up by Kaviyan Salak to bring mangosteen - a fruit so prized that Queen Victoria is said to have offered £100 and a knighthood to anyone who could bring it to Britain - to UK shelves as a pure juice rather than a rare treat flown in occasionally. The company, based between Devon and London, works with existing Southeast Asian plantations rather than clearing new land: mangosteen trees are planted alongside banana and tea crops, live for up to a hundred years and can produce around 3,000 fruit each over their lifetime.

The juice is pressed and bottled in Vietnam, close to where the fruit is grown, and shipped to the UK by cargo vessel rather than air freight to keep the footprint down. There are three products - pure mangosteen, a mangosteen and lychee blend, and a mangosteen and pomegranate blend - all 100% juice with no added sugar or preservatives, sold in fully recyclable packaging: glass bottle, paper label, aluminium cap, no plastic anywhere in it. Mangosteen itself is rich in xanthones and antioxidants, which is most of the appeal beyond the taste.
