Cox and Laflin Butchers

Butcher

Food hygiene rating: 5 out of 5

On the edge of Dartmoor, working out of Ullacombe Farm just outside Newton Abbot, this family run butchers has built its reputation on knowing exactly where everything comes from. The beef is free-range and comes from local farmers including Heckland Farm at Christow and Moorhouse Farm at Hennock. The lamb, also free-range, arrives from Gages abattoir in Ashburton. Taste of the West named them Best Butcher's Shop in 2022, which tells you the approach works.

Pork comes via the Cornish Farmhouse Bacon Company in Holsworthy, and the meat boxes are put together from the same local supply chain rather than anything bought in blind. There is also a private cutting service if you have your own animal or a particular job in mind, though pricing and availability are worth confirming first. Call or email ahead for that, otherwise drop in during normal business hours and see what is on the counter.
