Food hygiene rating: 5 out of 5

Hook is a contemporary take on the chip shop, at 88 South Street and a short walk from Cathedral Green - which, as they point out, makes a very good picnic spot if the weather holds. There are tables inside for when it doesn't.

They are, by their own admission, fussy about fish: all of it MSC certified from sustainable sources and frozen at sea within hours of being caught. The chips are British potatoes, peeled and cut on site. Every fish dish arrives with a pot of tartare sauce and a wedge of lemon, there are halal options, and the salt and pepper squid and wholetail breaded scampi both reward ordering. Sourcing stays local where it can and the packaging is mostly recyclable.
