Food hygiene rating: 5 out of 5

Gail, Brian and Jo run this old pub in the heart of Beaminster, and the rhythm of the place shifts with whoever walks in: singers, bell-ringers and walkers arriving in a group for much-needed refreshment one minute, a quiet drink and a catch-up on local news the next. As owners of greyhounds themselves, they mean it when they say well-behaved dogs are welcome, muddy walk and all.

Almost all the food is sourced locally, with meat from Nick Tett the Butcher and fruit and veg from Anthony at Fruit 'n Two Veg, both a few steps away on The Square. There is a curry menu every Friday and a traditional roast on Sunday lunchtime, plus ever-changing blackboard specials above the bar, which have helped earn Gold in the Taste of the West South West Dining Pub category. Book a table in the main bar, or ask about the quieter Snug.
