Eat On The Green

A sixteenth-century building with tables looking straight onto the Cathedral Green, in the shadow of Exeter Cathedral itself, and a kitchen that serves breakfast all day because people kept asking for it. Lunch runs alongside it from noon, there is a children's menu, and vegetarians and vegans are properly catered for rather than merely tolerated.

The Devon Afternoon Tea is the set piece - hand-cut sandwiches, a chef's selection of artisan cakes, their own scones with Cornish clotted cream and local jams, and as much locally blended tea or coffee as you would like, served from 2pm. They make their own lemonade, squeeze the oranges and build the shakes to order, with draught lager, local IPA and stout behind the bar. Regulars will tell you about the carrot cake, and on a clear day the view over the Green is as much the draw as anything on the plate.
