Food hygiene rating: 5 out of 5

Richard grew up in Chagford and has farmed on Dartmoor with the conviction that the moor itself does most of the work. The cattle are Luing, a hardy breed from the Scottish Isle of Luing that copes well with rugged hill grazing, and they mature slowly as part of the ecosystem rather than in spite of it. The lambs run freely on the common, grazing the varied plants and herbs that grow there.

Beef and lamb, free range and grass fed, sold as everything from mince to full meat boxes with no order considered too big or small. The slow growing shows up in the eating: marbled, tender beef, and lamb that is leaner but with real depth of flavour from the muscle it has had time to build. Worth ordering a box if you want to understand what the moor does to meat.
