Food hygiene rating: 5 out of 5

Beachwood is named after its owner's old neighbourhood in Los Angeles, which is a long way from Chagford in every sense, and the Financial Times has since called it one of the world's fifty greatest food stores. That is a lot to live up to from a small shop on The Square, and it does.

All the bread is made by hand from organic, stoneground UK flour, with gluten free loaves baked from sorghum, rice and buckwheat flours for anyone who needs them. Alongside it are cakes, ice cream and a house take on the classic custard slice using semolina custard and raspberry jam, though the coffee and walnut slice is what people come back for. Seating inside is very limited and they don't take pre-orders, but phone in the morning and they will put things aside for later.
