Fifty years of farming at Upton Barton in South Devon sits behind every bottle here. Jonathan Bell grew up on the farm, took a degree in Agriculture and spent three decades in the industry before deciding the land could produce something more sustainable and more interesting than a raw commodity. Rachel, from a farming background herself, handles the marketing side and the shows. The rapeseed is grown, pressed and bottled on site, with full traceability.

The oil has a clean, fresh taste with a slight nuttiness, and there are garlic and basil versions alongside the original. It carries half the saturated fat of olive oil, is naturally rich in omega 3 and a good source of Vitamin E. A burn point of 220C means it handles roasting and stir-fries as happily as it does dressings, drizzling and cake making. Buy the original first, then decide whether the flavoured bottles earn their shelf space.
