Believed to be Teignmouth's oldest pub, with an ale house on this waterside site since 1132, when it was known as The Ferryboat and stood where the ferry from Shaldon used to land. It survived being used as the French raiders' headquarters during the ransacking of Teignmouth in the 1690s, and the beamed ceilings and thick stone walls inside still carry that age.
Three open fires keep it going through winter, and two beer gardens take over in summer, with beach access close by. The kitchen runs a baguette selection, mains and weekly chef's specials alongside a dedicated Sunday menu, and the bar keeps a rotating line of local cask ales - Dartmoor Jail Ale among them. It's a family-friendly, non-rowdy sort of pub, with the occasional traditional jazz night, open daily from late morning into the evening.
