Food hygiene rating: 5 out of 5

Halulu sits above Teignmouth beach, elevated enough to look straight out over the water, and runs a double life - beach cafe by day, cocktail bar with a tropical lean once the sun goes down. It's the work of four local families, including the people behind Dr Inks Curiosities, the Victorian-themed cocktail bar on Exeter Quay, and Bronx Bar & 'Cue on Teignmouth's Regent Street, so there's real bar-running experience behind it rather than a one-off opening.

Daytime means coffee, light bites and hot dogs; evenings shift to an extensive cocktail list with genuinely inventive drinks, like a banana mai tai made with brewed rum rather than the usual shortcut syrup. Seating runs both indoors and out, with covered areas and gas fires that keep the outdoor tables usable once the weather turns. It's become one of the seafront's better-known spots for an evening drink, helped by staff reviewers consistently describe as warm and knowledgeable rather than just fast.
