Wellhayes Vineyard

Vineyard

Food hygiene rating: 5 out of 5

Grapes grown in the rolling hills of mid Devon, pressed and made into sparkling wine on the same patch of ground: that is the whole proposition at this Tiverton vineyard, and it is a tidier one than most. Doors are open seven days a week to anyone who wants to pop in and see how it works, subject to availability, and concerts and events run through the year alongside the winemaking.

The shop covers sparkling wine from historic vintages at 33 to 40 pounds, a house brandy called Wellhayes Fire from 9 pounds, and their own liqueur chocolates and truffles from 2.50. Guided tours with tasting run Sundays and Wednesdays at 3pm from May to September, by appointment, roughly an hour and a half at 30 pounds a head. Serious drinkers should ask about the vertical tasting, three vintages side by side.
