The Mitre Inn

Witheridge sits in the Devon countryside a short drive from Tiverton, and this 17th century pub has held onto its character rather than scrubbing it away: big open fire, traditional decor, a bar that welcomes dogs and walkers coming off the Two Moors Way. Five rooms upstairs make it a bed and breakfast too, including a family room, two ensuite doubles and two dog-friendly rooms with a shared bathroom.

The kitchen works through traditional favourites with modern twists, using local produce and suppliers where it can, with vegetarian and vegan options and smaller dishes for children. Exmoor Ales and Bray Valley Wines are behind the bar, and the specials board changes regularly, so the Facebook page is worth a look before you set off. The restaurant can be booked for small functions. Sunday lunch, served from noon, is what people keep coming back for.
