Mead has a decent claim to being the oldest fermented drink we know of, turning up in vessels dating back to 7000BC and running through European, African and Asian drinking history before the Norse myths got hold of it. At the foot of the Quantock Hills, just outside Taunton, that long thread picks up again in small batches. Traditional recipes sit alongside modern ones, and the honey wine is made by hand rather than by the tankful.

Small-batch production means no two meads taste exactly the same, which the makers treat as a feature rather than a problem to engineer out. Several variants are made, each with options to choose from. There is also a line of clothing carrying Viking, Mjolnir and Vegisvir designs, with t-shirts at £25 and hoodies at £35. Note that you need to be 18 or over to view the site, so buy accordingly.
