Venn Valley Vineyard

Vineyard

Food hygiene rating: 5 out of 5

Vines in the North Devon hills still sound improbable to some, which is rather the point at Blakes Hill Road, Landkey, just outside Barnstaple. This is one of very few vineyards in the county's north, planted on the same latitude as the celebrated growing regions around Cologne. The owners are candid about the years of preparation behind it, and just as happy to talk about working practices and ethos as about what ends up in the glass.

The range covers a Devon White from £18.99, a Devon Rose from £19.99 and a Pinot Noir Rose from £21.99, alongside a first release Sparkling Wine, with an online shop for orders. Tours and tastings run through the seasons at 10.30am and 2.30pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, plus 10.30am on Sundays, capped at 20 people. Book ahead if you want the full walk round rather than just the bottle.
