The Royal George

A period pub in Appledore, the maritime and fishing village three miles north of Bideford, with a public bar that keeps its late 19th or early 20th-century counter and back fitting. New owners took it through an extensive refurbishment and reopened it as an award-winning restaurant with rooms - four bedrooms above the pub and six more a short walk away on the quay.

The kitchen works a modern British menu built around local seafood and refined pub classics, with dishes like moules marinière and an Exmoor beef burger with sriracha mayonnaise and pickled onion rings showing up on the daily carte alongside daily specials, indulgent sides, British cheeses and a Sunday lunch. Children are properly catered for rather than handed a token menu, and everything leans on seasonal, local ingredients rather than a fixed year-round list.
