The Salutation Inn

FishmongerSeafoodAfternoon TeaPubRestaurant

Food hygiene rating: 5 out of 5

Nearly 300 years of sailors, travellers and revellers have passed through this former coaching inn in the middle of Topsham, the estuary town about fifteen minutes from Exeter. Tom and Amelia Williams-Hawkes and family have restored it into something unusually broad: a restaurant, six en-suite rooms and a self-catering flat, a fishmonger and a wellbeing studio, all pulling from Devon's land, sea and the people working both.

Doors open at 8:30 seven days a week, with breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea daily and dinner Wednesday to Saturday under new head chef Chris Simon. Expect fresh local seafood, properly aged steaks and seasonal Devon produce, plus a Sunday jazz lunch and supper clubs through the year. The fishmonger sells day-boat fish, prepared dishes and pantry goods. Book ahead for dinner, and check what's on before you travel.
