The Pigs Nose Inn

East Prawle sits about as far south as Devon gets, and the pub on its village green has the distinction of being the county's most southerly independent live music venue. The adjoining hall hosts everything from emerging local acts to well-known national and international names, from quiet acoustic evenings to nights that fill the dance floor. The Times recently named it one of the UK's ten best proper pubs, which feels about right.

Cooking is seasonal and unfussy, built on local produce and familiar combinations, with menus shifting according to what is available. Recent plates have included buttermilk-fried Brixham monkfish, a twice-baked Quicke's Cheddar souffle, ham hock scotch egg and a rotating market fish of the day. Sunday roasts run weekly. Cask ales, ciders and a concise wine list back it up, and the pizza kitchen runs April to late September. Check the gig dates, then book dinner first.
