The Milk Cart

Farm gateDairy

Food hygiene rating: 2 out of 5

Around eighty years ago, Joseph Squire delivered milk into Great Torrington from the back of a cart. Four generations on, the same family farm has gone back to that idea with a mobile vending machine, powered entirely by green energy, that brings farm fresh milk to people who cannot easily get out to a farm gate. Rob has farmed here all his life; Sharon adds an honours degree in Environmental Biology to the operation.

Milk goes from the herd to the machine within hours, and the trailer moves between sites on a weekly rotation, so you learn where it will be and when. Payment is by notes, coins or contactless. They favour glass bottles because they wash up well and can be refilled indefinitely, though any container will do provided it holds a litre and has a secure lid. Check the current rotation, then bring something clean.
