Sladers Yard Cafe

Art gallery first, but the cafe is no afterthought. Sladers Yard shows carefully curated exhibitions of contemporary British artists chosen for the quality and integrity of their work - painters, printmakers, ceramic artists and sculptors among them - inside a building sensitively converted by furniture maker Petter Southall, whose own work is part of what you come for. Eating surrounded by pieces you could actually take home is a rarer experience near Bridport than it should be.

The cafe is fully licensed and open all day, every day, with locally produced food cooked fresh and drinks to match. Names on the walls have included Frances Hatch, Martyn Brewster, Julian Bailey, Anita Klein and Sue Ure, alongside Southall's chairs, tables, desks and cabinets. Go with time in hand rather than squeezing it into a dash along the coast, and walk the exhibition properly either side of whatever you order.
