There has been a working mill at Otterton since at least Norman times, when William the Conqueror handed the land to the abbots of St Michel in Normandy. What sits there now, beside the River Otter and a mile from the Jurassic Coast, is a good deal busier than a grain store: cafe-restaurant, farm shop, courtyard bakery, art gallery and craft centre, plus a claim to being Devon's leading roots music venue. Milling still happens on set dates.
Bread, cakes and scones are baked daily in the courtyard bakery, and the kitchen works with local, seasonal produce and named local producers. Breakfast runs to three free range scrambled eggs on toasted Mill bread, poached or fried eggs, pan-fried mushrooms with a vegan option, and a bacon sandwich of three rashers of award-winning local hand-cured bacon. The cafe took Taste of the West Best South West Cafe/Tearoom in 2023. Book a table, and check the live music listings before you go.
