Georgie Porgies Puddings

Food hygiene rating: 5 out of 5

Georgie Porgie's Puddings makes traditional steamed puddings by hand from a working kitchen behind its own pudding shop in Budleigh Salterton, on Perriams Place. The recipes are closely guarded and rooted in classic English steamed puddings rather than anything reinvented - round steamed puddings in flavours like orange and Cointreau, cider and apple, and lemon and Pimm's, alongside traditional Christmas puddings.

Steamed sponges cover the rest of the range: treacle, spotted dick and sticky toffee among them, made with the same traditional steaming method rather than shortcuts. The puddings are sold direct from the shop as well as through retail and wholesale, and have found their way onto some notable tables - the company counts the late Queen and the then-Prince of Wales among past customers. It's a small operation built on one thing done properly rather than a wide menu.
