Gather sits on Fore Street in Totnes and runs a kitchen built almost entirely around what's local and, where possible, foraged - vegetables, Brixham-landed fish, game, and herbs and mushrooms gathered from fields, hedgerows and the shoreline rather than shipped in. It's a small, relaxed dining room rather than a formal one, but the food is serious: dishes like squab pigeon, beetroot steak and black bream bisque have appeared on the menu, alongside starters such as foie gras terrine and pan-fried scallops, and homemade bread served with hazelnut honey butter.
There's a choice of tasting menu, half tasting, vegetable tasting or prix fixe, so the format flexes between a full evening out and something quicker, and desserts run to chocolate fondant, toffee souffle and strawberry souffle with mint ice cream. It's open Tuesday to Saturday, lunch from midday to 3pm and dinner from 6pm with a last sitting at 9pm - closed Sundays and Mondays.
