The Smugglers Rest

Restaurant

Food hygiene rating: 5 out of 5

A late Victorian residence in the middle of Mortehoe, brought back to life by Will and Stacey, who had long wanted a bed and breakfast by the sea and fell for this quirky building. The restoration has been sympathetic rather than showy, so original features sit alongside quiet comfort. Woolacombe is a mile off, the South West Coast Path runs close by, and the cliffs and coves start more or less at the door.

Miss Fea's Bistro occupies the newly refurbished ground floor, a relaxed room serving fresh, locally sourced dishes that change with the seasons to make the most of Devon produce. Upstairs there are eight en-suite rooms across two floors, individually styled, a mix of doubles, kings and a twin, with breakfast included. Worth knowing: the bistro is open to non-residents too, and booking is recommended, especially in the busier months.
