The Odd Wheel

Licensee records here run back to 1794, when the place was the Old Inn, becoming the Jubilee Inn in 1810 for George III's Golden Jubilee before settling on its current odd name. It sits in the village of Wembury on the outskirts of Plymouth, less than a mile from the beach, which explains the mix of walkers, families and dogs through the door. A village pub doing the ordinary things properly rather than reinventing itself.

The drinks list leans local and says so: St Austell and Dartmoor beers, Devon ciders, Salcombe gin, wines and spirits, plus a proper range of coffees, teas and hot chocolates for the days the coastal wind wins. Food uses locally produced ingredients, with the homemade Odd Wheel burger a reliable order. There is live music and a weekly quiz. Food runs 12 to 3 and 5 to 8.30 midweek, straight through to 8.30 on Saturdays and to 6 on Sundays; call if the booking system looks full.
