The Husbandry School

Food hygiene rating: 5 out of 5

On a hilltop just outside Ashburton, near Bickington, Carole and Jonty Williams have turned years of traditional sustainable gardening, farming and land management into something you can actually take part in. The gardens are the working proof of the argument: that food, craft and ecologically sound land management belong together rather than in separate compartments. It is a place built on a long-held conviction, and the teaching reflects that rather than fashion.

There is education and training, a cookery school, schools curriculum support, volunteering, and public courses running from woodworking and felting to basketry and belts, plus family experience days and gift vouchers you can leave open for the recipient to choose. Their growers supply vegetables from the site itself, with local veg bags and free-range meat delivered to Ashburton, Bickington, Buckfastleigh, Denbury, Newton Abbot and nearby from £14.30 a week.
