Alison and Simon Thomson took on this steep, stony patch at the apex of a small valley near Dawlish in 1990, and quickly worked out that scaling up wasn't an option. The land won't grow crops or take houses, but it sits among woodland and heathland with the biodiversity that comes with it. Organic certification followed in 2003. Alison now manages the farm with her son Ross and his wife Ginny, and no pesticide, synthetic fertiliser or non-emergency antibiotic has been used since.

Coastal Goats is the milk side of things: raw organic goats' milk, gently pasteurised milk at £4.15 a litre, frozen raw milk, yoghurt, and what they say is the only certified organic goat milk kefir available. There's organic chicken and slow grown, pasture reared lamb too. Ordering is done online with set dispatch days, so check the delivery schedule before you buy.
