One Market Street Cafe

Hannah and Tom run this one themselves at 1 Market Street in Hatherleigh, just off the A386 and right on the Tarka Trail. It's independent, dog friendly, and built around locally sourced, seasonal ingredients - a claim plenty of places make, but fewer build the whole point of the place around it the way this one does.

The all-day breakfast menu runs from eggs benedict royale and egg in a hole to avocado on sourdough, with locally sourced sausages, bacon and eggs, and a gluten-free cooked breakfast available on request. Beyond that there's a market breakfast, cream tea, frothy coffee and homemade cake, with the full menu listed online if you like to decide before you arrive. Dine in or take away, both work. Open Tuesdays 9am to 4pm, Wednesdays 9am to 2.30pm, and Thursdays through Saturdays 9am to 4pm - plan around the shorter Wednesday, and bring the dog.
