Doddiscombsleigh sits between the Haldon Hills and the Teign Valley, and the cottage at its heart has been serving drinkers since 1837, having acted as the village's unofficial Church House from at least the early 1600s. The parish itself runs back further still, to the Domesday Book of 1086. What you get now is low-beamed ceilings, log fires and a team who treat customers, in their own words, as invited guests at a party.

Food is built around local produce, with the menu changing daily according to what is available, and there are rooms upstairs if you would rather not drive home. One important caveat: a recent kitchen fire means service has moved to an outdoor BBQ menu, and they will not open for food if it is raining.
